Core Safety Group

Intended Audience

This course is principally intended to provide employees with only limited exposure or potential exposure to silica and respirable crystalline silica dust introductory awareness training. This training is applicable to employers and employees in nearly all places of construction employment at which employees / workers may be exposed to rock, concrete and similar dusts.

  • Workers working on or near construction and construction related projects at which silica dust may be generated but whom are not specifically exposed to generated silica dust or respirable crystalline silica dust.
  • Workers that should have an understanding of what training and information non-silica exposed employees on the jobsite may have received or will receive
  • Construction foreman
  • Construction supervisors
  • Construction managers
  • Construction project managers

Why Take This Course

By taking this course, you will learn about contents of the new OSHA regulation concerning silica and respirable crystalline silica and where to get a copy of the regulation, be able to recognize who and what a competent person is and the basic requirements surrounding OSHA’s new Respirable Crystalline Silica standard (e.g. exposure limits, housekeeping, written exposure control plan, medical monitoring, training and recordkeeping).

You will have a more thorough and up-to-date understanding of the magnitude of silica in the construction environment, basic hazards, evaluation and control techniques and OSHA’s new requirements surrounding the new Respirable Crystalline Silica in construction regulation. Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what respirable crystalline silica is and the health hazards associated with it
  2. Recognize employer responsibilities and employee rights under the standard on respirable crystalline silica

Course Topics

  • Introduction to Silica and Respirable Crystalline Silica (Backgrounds, Definitions)
  • Common Construction Activities with the Greatest Potential for Exposure
  • Common Hazards, Evaluation and Control Techniques of Silica and Respirable Crystalline Silica
  • Importance of Signs and Labels, Housekeeping, Written Exposure Control Plan
  • Silica and Respirable Crystalline Silica in Construction Summary

This course will identify the basic health hazards associated with exposure to silica and respirable crystalline silica dust, some of the common construction tasks that could result in exposure to respirable crystalline silica, and typical control measures employers may implement to protect workers from exposure to silica and respirable crystalline silica including engineering controls, work practices and respirators.
